What do you mean by Plant Based BBQ?

All of our sauces and rubs are made from 100% plant based ingredients. In addition, because plant proteins and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, jackfruit, soy, tofu, mushrooms, etc. cook a bit different than their meat counterparts, our sauces and rubs have been specially formulated to pair perfect with plant based proteins

Who created this BBQ foolery?

Kansas City BBQ Legend Brian Rodgers created Fool’s Gold based on his award winning sauces and rubs, modified for plant based proteins, that have been winning local, regional and national awards for many years.

Can you taste the smoke in the Plant Based proteins and Vegetables?

Yes, in fact, better than it’s meat counterparts! It is much easier and faster to get smoke into plant based BBQ. It can take over 24 hours to smoke a brisket properly, you can have plant based brisket smoked, on the table, and ready to eat in less than an hour!

What if I don’t own a smoker?

Smokers come in every size and shape and can range from a few dollars up to thousands of dollars for a competition BBQ rig. If you already have a favorite smoker, that’s great, you can get started creating plant based BBQ immediately!

Our main goal at Fool’s Gold is to make plant based BBQ accessible to anyone who wants great tasting BBQ. To that end, for those that don’t already have a smoker they like, we have proprietary wood-infused smoking bags that can be used in the oven, grill or campfire that uses Brian special blend of hickory, mesquite and Alder wood! Using these bags, anyone with access to an oven, grill, campfire can produce amazing BBQ with little or no BBQ experience!!

Can I use it with meat?

Yes, you can and definitely should! Our rubs and recipes are decades old and have won huge awards in meat and sauce categories at many competitions around the U.S. They were originally created for Kansas City ribs, chicken, pork, sausage, burnt ends, brisket, ham, turkey, pit beans, etc. After moving to Colorado, Brian started experimenting with his recipes to make them work better with plant based proteins and vegetables, but they are based on the same award winning recipes that he originally started with in 1983!

Why do I need “rubs?”

Rubs provide the overall BBQ flavor of your final dish, without rub, you will be left with a bland tasting dish with little to no flavor. There are literally thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of rub recipes. Most rub recipes or commercially available rubs don’t quite work well with plant based foods, so it is important to get this step right!

The actual winning formula for great Kansas City BBQ hasn’t really changed in the past 100 years. Sure, everyone experiments with different meats, foods, etc. but the formula itself hasn’t changed and never will. Every great pitmaster follows this formula exactly and if any of the steps are left out, you will be left with mediocre BBQ at best and certainly not Kansas City Style BBQ.

Is plant based BBQ healthy?

Yes, in fact, our founder Brian Rodgers was able to lose 120 pounds and reverse 6 life threatening diseases all within 6 months by eating primarily plant based BBQ! This life changing event in his life was the catalyst to bringing the same plant based recipes he used to the world! He has since lost another 30 pounds and has kept it off for years!

Does plant based BBQ taste good?

Yes, in fact, we have now served our style of plant based BBQ to thousands of people with raving success! Brian Rodgers is a name known in the BBQ world, especially on the competition BBQ circuit. His recipes have been winning competitions and awards for decades. The same great recipes and flavors that have won so many awards have now been modified for plant based BBQ!

What else does Fool’s Gold Sauce taste Good on?

Literally anything, it is an extremely versatile sauce, more like all purpose condiment. It is great as a bbq sauce, marinade, glaze, ketchup, dip and so much more. In addition to using it on plant based foods, We have reports of people using it on chicken, ribs, sloppy joes, chili, soups, burgers, burritos, tacos and so much more!

Who invented plant based BBQ?

While, it is always a stretch to say that you actually invented something like BBQ, our founder Brian Rodgers is certainly the world's leading expert on plant based BBQ and served the first known plant based BBQ dish in a compeitition in 1997. He has consulted with major restaurants, world renowned chefs, BBQ teams and many others that have sought his expertise in plant based BBQ preparation and execution.

What is Brian’s favorite plant based meal?

There are so many great plant based BBQ options that you could literally try something amazing every single day. But his absolute favorite plant based food is smoked apples! He simply slices up an apple, rubs it, smokes it, sauces it and wow! Brian always says that he could eat this everyday of his life!

Why is there a no salt and Sugar Version of the Fool’s Gold rub?

Great question! One of the primary reasons Fool’s Gold was created was to be able to enjoy world class Kansas City BBQ but in a quicker and healthier way. This includes limiting both salt and sugar especially if you are trying to lose weight or fighting certain health related issues. We love both salt and sugar but most BBQ sauce and rubs contain inordinate amounts of both of them.

In addition to our regular rub which contains small amounts of the least processed salt and sugar we could find, We created a way to have the best of both worlds, great BBQ with less salt and sugar than most!

To this end, we created a salt & Sugar free version our rubs with no salt and sugar whatsoever. They are great as is, but for those that want and need a little salt and sugar, we developed a Hickory Smoked Salt that is absolutely incredible!

You simply add to your rubs or directly on your finished dish! Not only is it amazing salt, it also brings even more smoked flavor to your food! We have also recently added one of the healthiest sugars (Demerara) known in the world to our product line up.

What is demerara sugar?

As with the salt, there is no sugar in any of our rubs which is highly unusual for Kansas City style rub. We tested hundreds of different variations of sugar in all of our plant based recipes and in the end, we went with a sugar that Brian has been using as one of his secret ingredients in his competition BBQ rub for decades, demerara sugar. Demerara is very rarely used by others as it is not very well known and can be a little difficult to find. Like the smoked salts, we only add sugar to the rubs as needed.

Is your sauce healthier than the traditional BBQ sauce?

Although we can’t make any specific health claims, this exact sauce helped Brian Rodgers in his health journey to lose over 150 pounds and reverse 6 life threatening diseases. The sauce was modified from his original award winning sauce to work better with plant based foods. A tablespoon serving of Fool’s Gold Original contains just 3 Grams of Sugar and just under 60 mg of sodium making it a very good alternative to most other BBQ sauces on the market if health and great taste are at the top of your list.
